IP NEWS: US $ 550 Million Deal for Facebook over AOL Patents from Microsoft

Saturday, 05 May 2012 20:13

Facebook which is preparing for a stock market listing with a reported income of US $ 205 m during its first quarter this year, managed to outbid with much success its rivals with a US $ 550 m offer for the purchase of some 650 of the AOL patents and relative licences pertaining to giant Microsoft, it has been recently announced.

The deal has been claimed to be a significant step for Facebook’s expanding intellectual property portofoglio given the fact that Facebook has purchased a number of patents from IBM in March 2012. Earlier this year, other similar patents have been also purchased by Intel and Google.

The current race for the purchase of as many patents as possible has been instigated by the numerous judicial proceedings filed over patents which if successful, could lead to a ban over the sales of a company’s product or products apart from the request of potentially high licence fees by the patent’s title holder.

Facebook has been served with patent infringement proceedings filed by Yahoo earlier this year against it .
